About Simple Virtues
Sam at KidsFest 2019 in Jupiter, Florida
I first designed the Simple Virtues® Hearts Collection as a way of spreading and celebrating positive values. One of my sisters always kept a list of simple virtues with her to remind her of living by these principles, and I thought that my products could help to share this with others. It also turns out that living by simple virtues has a rich history, and has been discussed and written about for millennia by well-known thinkers including Plato, Aristotle, and, in more modern times, Lincoln.
One day, my wife was wearing a “Heart Full of Virtues”TM T-shirt when we went out to a restaurant. A guy came up to us excitedly to ask where we got that shirt – he said he was an elementary school teacher and the shirt would be great for getting kids talking about Social Emotional Learning!
I realized right away that helping teachers and parents get kids talking about positive values and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) should be my main focus in bringing my designs to the public.
The more I meet and speak with people involved in this, the more I realize how important this work is. And the more I research, the more I learn about how exposing kids to these positive values concepts helps to make them more receptive to learning about SEL when it's presented in school. That's what our products are designed to do.
Simple Virtues® supports teachers in their efforts to teach SEL to their students. A portion of all sales will be donated to support SEL projects in schools through DonorsChoose.
Welcome to my store, please share us and invite your friends to come visit, and I hope you’ll support our mission to help teachers in their noble work teaching our kids about SEL.
Sam McCollough, Founder
Sam started his career working with graphic artists and learned from this experience how to combine color and graphic elements together to create an emotion and achieve an objective. He has also spent much of his career in education as a software trainer, and through this has learned how to use words to inspire people.
Design, color, and words: A perfect combination to convey positive values which, after all, are rooted in words more than pictures. Fun art that captures kids’ attention is also important, since the primary objective here is to help reach kids! He learned that this could be a very powerful tool to help teachers and parents teach kids about Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
Sam's wife, Eneida, is a Social Worker who works with elderly patients with Alzheimer's and dementia, and we see many simple virtues, such as compassion, empathy, and kindness, exemplified in her job on a daily basis. Ene also has experience in graphic art, and her eye has played a significant role in bringing our designs to where they are today.
Sam was motivated to create Simple Virtues® to share, spread, and celebrate these positive values and to teach kids about SEL. He will continue working, via table vendor events around Southeast Florida, simplevirtues.com, his Facebook shop and Facebook Group "Simple Virtues SEL Networking and Resource Sharing Community," his Amazon Simple Virtues store, and in partnerships with public schools, the PTA and other organizations, to keep this important mission going.
